Different Types of Windows

Windows are an essential part of every building and the ones you choose need to be right for aesthetics, security, temperature control, and long-term implications. Different types of windows may have some or all these factors, so pick wisely.

Thermally Broken and Unbroken

The frame of a window can impact the amount of energy you save throughout the year. The level of sound you hear from the outside is also affected. A thermally broken frame is a protective border between the outside part of the frame and the inside, limiting the exchange of cold air from the outside in winter, and hot air in summer.

Windows without a thermal break can expose your home to the elements, meaning less comfort and higher power bills. They’ll be more at risk of corrosion from humid or salty air too.

Awning

Awning windows hinge at the top and open outward with a winder. They can be locked, making them a safe option. They open outwards and angled away from the house – you can keep the window open during rain. You can control the air flow in any weather condition.

Sash-less

A sash is the aluminum or timber frame which goes around the windowpane. A sash-less window consists of two over locking panes of glass which slide smoothly over each other as they’re raised or lowered at the same time. As you open the window at one side, the other side opens the same amount. You’ll gain excellent ventilation and views.

Sliding

A sliding window opens by sliding horizontally along a top and bottom track in the window frame. Sliding windows are usually more wide than tall. They provide an unobstructed view of your surroundings and are easy to operate.

Louvre

A Louvre window features adjustable horizontal slats, allowing control of air flow and natural light in an elegant way. They’ll allow you to see as much or as little of the outside.

Casement

Casement windows hinge at the side opening out to the left or right. Modern day casements open and close easily with the easy-turn fold-down handle. These are often used in kitchens or bathrooms where ventilation is key.

Double Hung

Double hung windows are rectangular and have several divided panes. It features a sash on the lower section that slides up with when opening the window. These windows look traditional but are found in modern homes in a contemporary style. Air flows naturally in an out through the process of convection.

Fixed

Fixed windows are inoperable as they cannot be open or closed. They are there purely for aesthetics, providing an obstructed view of the outside and allowing natural light into the home.

Stacking

Stacking windows are easy to open and close, comprising of wide stacking panels with no external projections. These ideal for high traffic areas and allow ventilation and air flow into the home. They can be double glazed and double sealed to reduce the transfer of air and noise.

Strong and Safe

The strength and durability of aluminium offers more reliable intruder protection than wood.

Easy Maintenance

As aluminium isn’t susceptible to environmental influences, it requires minimal care. It simply needs to be wiped down a few times a few with a pH neutral cleaning agent or water and soap.
